The Government recognises that Tasmanian Aboriginal communities and organisations are critical to the renewable energy transition.

It is important that Aboriginal cultural heritage, cultural knowledge and connection to land and sea Country is protected, and that any benefits from renewable energy development are shared in an equitable and impactful way.

  • The Government has released guidelines for meaningful engagement. Click here to see the draft Guidelines for Community Engagement, Benefit Sharing and Local Procurement

There is a lot happening in the north west. We have heard that Aboriginal organisations and community representatives are under resourced, have limited capacity and are feeling consultation fatigue.

REZ seeks to minimise the impact of renewable energy development on community by attracting projects into a specific area. This means that there is opportunity to coordinate engagement programs, share knowledge and reduce the need for lots of project-by-project consultation.

How have we engaged to date with Tasmanian Aboriginal organisations and representatives?

  • Worked with Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania to include current data of cultural sites in the spatial analysis, acknowledging that there are major data gaps and a high probability more cultural site will be identified with further investigations.
  • Undertaken cultural awareness training from Melythina Tiakana Warrana Aboriginal Corporation
  • Through our Stakeholder Reference Group
  • Held information sessions with Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation, Tasmanian Aboriginal Corporation, Melythina Tiakana Warrana Aboriginal Corporation.

First Nations Clean Energy Strategy

The Australian Government is co-designing a First Nations Clean Energy Strategy with First Nations community and organisations, state jurisdictions and others.

The Strategy will identify what is needed to ensure that First Nations and Aboriginal people are empowered to determine and deliver services to meet needs and cultural requirements.

To date, there has been four round tables held in Tasmania to hear from community and industry.

The Strategy is currently being drafted, with the final Strategy to be released late 2024.

We will consider how REZ can complement the Strategy and help in delivering its objectives.
